How to Minimize Disruption with a Fluctuating Work Schedule

Posted

The modern workforce is built up of an ever-changing blend of full-time, contract, shift, and seasonal workers. For those on-call or hourly workers who need to manage a fluctuating work schedule, minimizing disruption to home life can be a challenge. But like every obstacle, there are several things you can do to make a fluctuating work schedule more manageable. Here are three tips to get you started.

1. Find a sleep schedule that works for you

Sleep is so important to effectiveness and quality of work that it earned the top spot in this list of tips. When you are managing a fluctuating work schedule, that consistent sleep schedule can be equally difficult to pin down. The trick is to find a schedule that works for you. If you are operating under normal business hours then get called in for a week of the graveyard shift, that can really reduce your ability to get the down time you need. Like new parents hear quite often, you should take every opportunity to nap, and catch up on the sleep that you miss. And if it really comes down to whether you can perform the job safely and well, you may need to pass on an opening and wait until you are better rested and able to perform.

2. Consider using family or friends to watch your children

Childcare can be a real challenge for flexible schedules because normal care centers often only work during business hours. Late pickups alone are often a challenge. But if you can plan for the lack of stability, and draw on the resources of your family and your friends to help you fill in the blanks, many flex work employees are able to get the care they need when they need it.

Other options include hiring an au pair or live in nanny who is able to be there for your kids whenever you need them to be. Your family is an important part of your life and as such their care should take precedence. But there are options available to workers who need more flexible options when it comes to childcare.

3. Be Open with Your Family

Sometimes on-call or hourly work can put a strain on family life. To alleviate this, talk to your kids and your spouse about why schedules change and why you can’t be at home at the same time every day. It’s about setting reasonable expectations.  Open communication will help bring any concerns to light and help your family talk through any issues before they become problems. Talk things out, and as much as is possible, spend quality time with those you love to help them remain front and center in your life and your success.
