Feeling helpless about your job search efforts is something many people experience. It’s hard to pursue a new job when it seems like nothing is going your way. That stress can have a real impact on your mental wellbeing. But know that you’re not alone in that experience, and there are things you can do to help improve your situation and keep pushing your career forward.  

Take a Break 

Sometimes, it can feel like you’re sending resumes and cover letters into a black hole. Frustration can lead to depression if you aren’t taking care of yourself in the process. Here’s a counter-intuitive trick to try. Take a break. There is a reason lunch breaks and coffee breaks are woven into the fabric of our professional lives. Workers need to take a little time to recuperate before they can hit the ground running again. Make sure you take advantage of that down time. Allow yourself to fully recharge and refocus so that when you are back on the job search you can bring your A-game.  

Pay Attention to Your Health  

Similarly, it’s near impossible to stay motivated when you are unwell. Make sure you are taking care of yourself in order to stay productive. Don’t let yourself fall back on the caffeine or sugar motivation pitfalls either. While we’ve all learned to appreciate the energy highs and lows associated with caffeine and sugar consumption, it’s not a great way to motivate yourself when what you really need is healthy food and a good night’s sleep. A little bit here and there can be enough to help you power through on a tough day. But drinking enough water and eating healthy food throughout the day will keep your energy level steady and your mind sharp.  

Set Goals that Inspire You 

When it comes to looking for a new job, it’s important to be honest about where you are and where you want to be. Setting small, achievable goals is a good tactic to get you through your day, but you also need something big to aim for so that you are inspired in the long term. Set challenging goals that make you want to get out of bed in the morning, do your best, and celebrate when you achieve smaller goals. An example of a small goal might be getting an interview. Or connecting with a new network. Focus on achievements that are important to you and that you will value in the long run, rather than just reasonable achievements that help you get a job. Make your goals a priority and stay motivated your goals top of mind. 

Get Focused  

Looking for a new job is not a passive activity. You need to get focused to get where you want to go. Do what you need to create a positive environment that supports your goals and accomplish tasks at scale. If that means maintaining a quiet workspace, removing distractions (like phone calls, emails, internet access, etc.), then do what you need to get things done. Momentum is a great motivator, so take it one step at a time. Lock down those small wins and before you know it, you’ll be walking into your new job faster than you’d thought you could.
