Summer Interview Attire Guide

Posted

The weather in Tennessee is warming up and the hotter days are here. The temps keep climbing, but you still need to look professional at your interview. It doesn’t matter if you are applying for a warehouse job or an office position. Professionalism shines through in how you present yourself in an interview. This post will offer advice on what to wear to look professional but not overdressed or overheated when going on a job interview.

Rethink Fabric and Color Choices

For warehouse jobs no matter the season, a three-piece suit or skirt and heels doesn’t strike the right tone. Instead, you can achieve a more relaxed business casual look for the interview by wearing slacks, a collared shirt or blouse, and practical footwear. Lighter fabrics like cottons and linens in light colors (such as creams and khakis) are great at helping keep you cool in the summer. Avoid wearing heavy wool fabrics or too many dark colors if you can, as these fabrics can get very hot, especially in direct sunlight.

Sleeve Lengths and Layers

In the hotter months, shorter sleeve lengths are a great way to stay cool. But avoid sleeveless tops to maintain a more conservative look. For ladies, summer dresses and skirts look great and help keep cool on sticky days. But try to pick those with some structure in light or bright colors and soft, friendly patterns and conservative hem lengths. Also, evaluate whether wearing a dress or skirt is a good representation of the job you are applying for. If the job is a more physical one, slacks may send the right message over a skirt.

Keep It Professional

While short sleeves are a great option in summer, experts say shorts are never appropriate in the office, as they look too laid back and can even reveal too much in a professional setting. Also, stay away from tank tops, old t-shirts, and bathing suits under your clothes. Avoid spaghetti-strapped and strapless dresses and anything considered too revealing Also, be careful about the fabric choice. Thin, barely-there sundresses should be saved for the weekend. A good rule of thumb is this: if you look like you’re ready for the beach, you do not belong at an interview.

Be Mindful of Your Shoe Choice

Shoes can often give away the game in an interview. They can be too casual. They can be too dressy. What you need for an interview in an industrial setting is something practical and professional. Flip flops are never appropriate, in a warehouse or in an interview. Similarly, too-casual sandals are definitely not an appropriate choice. For the women, if the shoes are too high to walk in comfortably, leave them at home. An interview is all about putting your best foot forward, so make sure your footwear says you are ready to hit the ground running.
