Incentives for Filling Your Night Shift Positions

Posted

When it comes to finding talent for your late shift positions, part of the challenge is in positioning the benefits of working graveyard. But there are benefits. If you can communicate these low-cost and no-cost incentives that are natural benefits of working graveyard, you can encourage more 2nd and 3rd shift applicants or help convince your 1st shift workers to switch. So think beyond the shift differential with these situational incentives.

Consider Offering Food

Employer provided snacks and coffee are a great way to help motivate your late night employees. It’s hard to stay awake through the night, but with a little extra energy, your graveyard crew can really appreciate pulling those all nighters. A box of pastries, fresh fruit, and other options are a great way for employers to show their appreciation and encouragement of their 3rd shift talent.

More Productivity Time

The third shift is naturally quieter. There are fewer meetings to attend. There are fewer people to interact with because there often isn’t a full crew staffed on the third shift. Frankly, quieter shifts mean less disruptions, less distractions, and more time to get things done. That’s good for you the employer and good for your employees who may be on the more introverted side. Consider positioning the late shift as a less disruptive shift, where employees can focus on their work and get more done in less time.

Less Traffic

For those working the night shift, the commute is drastically different. The reduction in time spent in traffic is a very real benefit to working the third shift. 3rd shift commutes are generally smoother, quicker, and overall less stressful. If you are not willing to spend hours of your week sitting in your car, the night shift might be a great fit for you.

More Daylight Free Time

The obvious change to someone’s lifestyle due to working graveyard will be to sleep timings. It’s important for workers on the third shift to plan for this and adjust their lifestyle accordingly. But if you are thoughtful about how you adjust your sleep patterns, you can actually make great use of your resting daylight hours. It takes discipline, but with the proper planning and acknowledgment that this is to be your new routine, you can make sure you are balancing both your work and your rest needs and getting some very nice free time during the day.

More Time With Loved Ones

This might seem a little counter-intuitive, as it can be difficult to maintain a robust social life when you are regularly working the night shift. But the interactions you do have are ones that you prioritize and are therefore more likely to be an important part of your health and wellness. This actually helps you to focus instead on the most high-value social interactions you have in your life, such as spending the time you need with your family, with your kids, with your closest and most supportive friends. Because you are making those interactions more of a priority, you will be getting more out of the relationships daily
