5 Tips for Staying Active During Cold-Weather Months

Posted

Staying healthy and active during the cold-weather months can be a challenge. But don’t let fear of the cold keep you cooped up inside and vulnerable to seasonal viruses, health issues and even depression. Here are five things you can do to stay active this winter.

Join a Class or Team

Finding an indoor sports team or exercise class can be a great way to stay motivated and active when the weather outside gets frightful. Think about sports that can be played indoors, such as basketball, racket ball, swimming, aerobics, yoga, kickboxing or tennis. There are any number of exercise classes held indoors at your local gym or community center. Plus, you have the added benefit of built-in accountability to attend classes you have paid for in advance or a team who is counting on you to show up for their next match.

Find an Indoor Pool

If you like swimming, indoor pools offer a flexible exercise opportunity that you can do on your own schedule. Swimming is great exercise and a wonderful way to destress and decompress after (or before) a long, hard day on the job. Make sure you don’t eat less than 30 minutes before you hit the pool to avoid those painful swimming cramps.

Don’t Overlook Home Workouts

A simple home workout doesn’t require a major financial investment and can help keep your energy levels up and your weight in check during the winter. There are plenty of free (or inexpensive) home-based exercise programs available online. Pick the program and the pace that is comfortable for you and jump on in. You can even invest in some home equipment to keep things interesting. Buying a used treadmill or weights used can help you get the machine without breaking the bank.

Walk the Mall

Walking is a surprisingly good form of exercise, and large venues such as malls make for an amazing track. Also, consider parking farther from the entrance of work or a store to get a little extra movement in your life. Why not commit to taking the stairs more? It’s these little decisions we make every day that add up to keep us healthy. While you might not feel like you’re doing a real workout, a simple pedometer or step tracker will tell you how many miles you’ve walked at the end of the day.

Spring for a Gym Membership

Of course, indoor gyms are counting on people coming in from the cold looking to lose the weight they’ve gained over the holidays. But if you commit to a gym membership before the new year, you’ll have a routine down before everyone else jumps on the bandwagon then burns out because the gym is too busy. A gym is a great option because you have access to a wide range of machines, weights, classes and programs that can keep you motivated to stay healthy throughout the year.
