Clean Up Your Office Image Today

Posted

When it comes to how we present ourselves, image really is everything. If you are able to earn the respect of your colleagues and maintain a positive reputation in the workplace, you are safeguarding your career in the long and short term. If you notice you aren’t getting quite the respect you think you deserve in the workplace, here are a few tips that All-Star Personnel suggests to help you clean up your act.

Being Prompt is More Than Just Polite

Lateness in the workplace is a common problem for many professionals. Everyone is multitasking constantly and often presented with back-to-back appointments. That said, lateness is viewed as disrespectful of other attendees’ time. By allowing yourself to be late, especially if it becomes a chronic problem, you really are sending a message of disrespect to your co-workers and your supervisors. While the occasional slip-up is likely easily forgiven in the workplace, you don’t want to become known for tardiness. Showing up on time and well-prepared displays strong time management skills and respect for your co-workers.

Limit Distractions

We live in a highly connected world. Between mobile phones and instant messaging becoming standard tools of the trade, it can be difficult to focus on your daily work amidst all the potential distractions. The best thing you can do is limit yourself. Do what you can to stay off your phone, except in a case of emergency. Avoid gossiping with co-workers or allowing yourself to be easily distracted from the task at hand. The ability to focus through all the noise in the modern workplace will serve you very well in terms of your office reputation, but also in how your supervisors present your work ethic in a reference down the road.

Watch Your Mouth

Language can be a tricky issue in the workplace. Depending on your company culture, you may feel inclined to use a more relaxed tone or certain words that are not particularly appropriate for the workplace. A good rule of thumb to go by is to avoid all inappropriate language, simply because it helps you present yourself as completely professional and respectful.  You wouldn’t swear in an interview setting. Likewise, you should be careful of the language you use in the office on a regular basis. It will help you maintain positive relationships with co-workers and managers and will help present a pristine and professional image in the workplace.

Maintain a Professional Wardrobe

Your attire says a lot about who you are as an employee as well. In manufacturing jobs, this can be more challenging since you could be working in a factory setting or doing more physical work. However, there is a difference between just rolling out of bed and being aware of how you show up for work each day. Managers and co-workers will notice the effort as it adds to your overall professional image.
