Leave a Lasting Impression on your Interviewer with This Tactic

Posted

There are so many ways to leave a good first impression during an interview, but chief among them is to be yourself. While this might sound cliché, there’s a reason you need to show up as your authentic (but still professional) self. It’s so they can make sure you fit in with the team culture, that your personality jives with the rest of the group, and that you also feel that you will be happy in the job for the long term. Here are a few other ways to make sure you leave a lasting impression with your interviewer.

Dress Your Best

They say to dress for the job you wish you had, even when you’ve been hired. Your first day on the job is an important day to present yourself as professional and prepared. Consider your interview attire, and try to emulate the look if not wear the same outfit again. It’s important to dress to fit in with the corporate culture, but on your first day, you may not know exactly what level of formal attire is appropriate at your new workplace. In this case, it is always better to be overdressed rather than underdressed.

Interview attire often implies a suit and tie for a man and a suit or skirt and blouse for a woman. Keep accessories and jewelry to a minimum. Put an emphasis on personal hygiene, and limit perfumes or colognes and makeup use. You want to present yourself as well put together as possible while also limiting distracting accessories to make a professional personal statement.

Be On Time

Arriving early is a good idea on your first day so that you can take a little time to get acquainted with your new surroundings and workspace. It also presents a very prepared and professional appearance in terms of your time management skills. Arrive late on your first day and coworkers might expect you to make the same mistake in the future, and that is not the kind of impression you want to give right at the beginning of your time with a new company. That said, you also don’t want to arrive so early as to be an inconvenience. Time management is key to a good impression.

Be Thoughtful

Remember to send a thank you email or even a handwritten note after the interview. This helps show your appreciation for their time and consideration. It also serves the purpose of a low key follow up. It can remind them that you are thoughtful and personable, and very interested in the position. Also, remember to send along your references right away if you promised you would do so. This is an act of thoughtfulness on your part, but it also shows that you are serious about the opportunity, that you know you are a good fit for the job, and you have the support of former coworkers and employers to back you up.
